Surat Bridge Develops Cracks Just 40 Days After Inauguration
Surat, Gujarat - Cracks have developed in the elevated portion of a road connecting the approach of Variav Ved Bridge in Surat, just 40 days after its inauguration. The four-lane 1.5km-long bridge was inaugurated on May 17 at a cost of Rs 118 crore.
The cracks were first noticed by Yogesh Diyora, secretary of Surat AAP, on Wednesday. He said that the cracks were a major damage that could lead to damage to the bridge approach road as well.
Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) officials said that the cracks were caused due to heavy rain, which led to soil settlement. They added that the contractor is supposed to repair any damage for five years from the development of the project.
The issue has raised concerns about the quality of construction of the bridge. Diyora said that it shows how major projects are executed in the city.
